In October, students and teachers got the chance to earn prizes in the library’s annual Teen Read contest. Students were encouraged to read a book then submit a short review. As an incentive, students then received prizes for their participation, in addition to having their names entered for Starbucks gift cards. Teachers also received credit for encouraging their students to read. They too had a chance to win prizes. “While it does compel kids to read, we want more than that. Reading is about learning English comprehension and language. This is simply a means to encourage that,” said Librarian Betty Arai. The competition ended on Nov. 1. The library will host a new competition while the winners will be announced next week.
