At the Science Olympiad regionals at Leeward Community College (LCC) on Feb. 1, the two teams, the brown and yellow, earned third and fifth place.

“We had one team that had students in all events, we didn’t have enough students to fill up the second team, so the second team didn’t participate in all the events, but participated in most of them,” said Science Olympiad adviser Tyson Kikugawa

The Science Olympiad competition is organized by Hawaii State Science Olympiad which encourages Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  “It shows that science is pretty exciting when you take it outside the classroom,” said Science Olympiad competitor Senior Adrianna Saymo.

During regionals, the Science Olympiad competition consisted of two divisions, the building and testing.  “We have everybody sort of doing a few events and it is a team, you can only have a couple students per event so we all sort of just have them pick what events they’re interested in because it is an after school thing,” said Kikugawa.

During the competition, the teams needed to balance time management. “ A lot of us are involved in so many other clubs and we have ap classes, so it’s difficult,” said Science Olympiad competitor Senior Viola Mocz.

The regionals is the first competition held for Science Olympiad, served as a good practice and experience for the new members on the team. “ I think given the fact that we had a lot of new students, I think they performed very well,” said Kikugawa.

The Science Olympiad teams are preparing for the states competition which will take place at LCC on March 1 .
