A glimpse into the sights of Itsukushima Shrine, junior Ryley Agsalda sits on the lookout of Miyajima Island’s torri gates off of the Hiroshima prefecture. Students were able to walk out to the torri gates since the island was at low tide; if it was high tide the gate would appear as if it was floating on top of the ocean.

Bowling has been in Sophomore Danielle August’s life for about 10 years. While being a gifted bowler, August also helps to add energy to MHS’ Boys and Girls Bowling Team. As a co-captain for this year’s girls portion of the team August has shown promising leadership capabilities.

“She has a lot of talent and skill for her age,” said Kellen Inafuku, Head Coach for the Boys and Girls Bowling Team. As a freshman, August was awarded the second team all-star award and recently took the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA ) champion title for bowling. “I think she is capable of taking OIAs and states again,” said Inafuku.

Growing up with bowling has greatly impacted August’s athletic ability. “My parents were bowling since they were kids so I was highly influenced to bowl at an early age,” said August.

August is motivated by her family and loves bowling for the feeling she gets during competition. “It’s kind of like I feel comfortable (when bowling),” August expressed. Even when the season is over, August continues to bowl. “She practices kind of plenty (and) she bowls on the weekend,” said Inafuku, “She goes to all different alleys across Oahu. She just bowls year-round, that’s (a) good thing.”

Along with her skill, a positive attitude is also something that August added to this year’s team. “She’s funny and she always knows how to cheer the team up no matter what happens,” said Co-captain Sophomore Breanne Hew, “She keeps everyone happy and level-headed.”

Because of her skill and dedication to bowling, Inafuku hopes to have August as a captain again in upcoming years. “I would hope she wants to be a captain. She’s just naturally talented,” said Inafuku.

“I look forward to (possibly being captain), and there’s always improvements that can be made in upcoming years, and I am looking forward to just making our team better than before,” said August. Bringing the team closer together and having more communication between players are some things that August will try to help better the bowling team in future years.
