(Photo courtesy of Leilani Ward-Riehle) Saxophone player Melissa Munemitsu (10) was one of many musicians who played jazz music for the Olaloa Community residents on Feb. 24.

On Feb. 24, the Associated Students of Mililani High School (ASMHS) and the Jazz Band traveled to the Olaloa Retirement Community to listen to, learn from, and bond with residents. They were joined by the student councils of all Mililani complex schools. Planning, collaborating and executing this event serves as their community service project; a way for leadership groups to learn from each other.

The focus of this annual trip is not only to encourage students to interact more with those in their community, but also to simply spread music and their love for the art to others. “It means a lot to play and give back to the community through music because music, playing my instrument with peers, and performing is something that I really enjoy. It means a lot knowing that others enjoy what we do as much as I do,” stated trumpet player Senior Kaela Natalia Calderon.
